For 2007/8 season, ex Brisbane driver and co founder of Brisbane Stockrods club, Allan Woods will be running speedway from the Charlton track near Toowoomba (bottom right). The Brisbane club have been invited to race some of their meetings and championships there as well as on their own Archerfield track. With two tracks to race on and more members and drivers each year things are looking up. Watch this space.

The cars went out onto the track in a disciplined manner for heat 1, including overseas visitors Craig Crasher Smith and BigN Nigel Woodhouse. Crasher was flying in heat 1 and was a quarter of a lap in front with one to go then he dropped a half shaft and that was his night finished as it turned out. The heat eventually went to Shane French. Dennis Fabian looked class in heat 2 and was never troubled as he went on to take a pole to flag win. Dudley Ward took heat 3 and again that man Dennis Fabian took heat 4. The car sounded good and he was looking quite steady. I thought everyone drove a steady meeting but I was impressed with Greg Churchill, Dennis, Dudley and Shane French. Craig Riseley in a car that looks a class act, looked a bit out of sorts which was disappointing, but Jason Martin and Wayne Nowlan were well up on the pace and definitely posed a threat for Sunday.

The star of the show for all the wrong reasons was Craig Crasher Smith. Craig actually stormed to a controlled win in heat 1. Then it all went upside down. The crowd, who are normally weaned on non contact, were beginning to get interested in heat 2, when he rolled after clipping another car then Kenny Finlay kept the power on and hooked him over. In heat 3 Smith double rolled spectacularly whilst trying to take out Dudley Ward on the last turn. It cost him a place in the feature and a shot at the title. The crowd around me were buzzing after both rolls and some of the good hits from some of the Aussie drivers, so it shows what they want. Craig's second roll broke an engine mounting so it was "goodnight Vienna", no show in the feature final so no chance of the Aussie title.
Well thats it then,
Greg Churchill (No 35) is the 2008 Aussie Champion and will (when confirmed) be coming to England for the World Final at Ipswich racing in an FWS car. He won in emphatic style, leading from lap one but he didn't have it all his way as Dudley Ward was hot on his heels finding masses of grip round the outside and infact passing Churchill twice but with a slow puncture could not maintain the pace and dropped back. Shane French in car 0 came a creditable 3rd and not that far behind Ward. Craig Riseley's car sounded brilliant and he was driving aggressively but came unstuck with a puncture, whilst last years BriSCA World Finalist Steve Bateman spent the last 7 with his back end stuck on the inside racing line unable to start the car. A complete contrast to the Riseley car was Dennis Fabian's who after Saturdays performance was racing a car which sounded like a can of mabs in a threshing machine...!
I'm sorry I can't compete with Ryno when it comes to extolling the virtues of a Brisbane Stockrod race but I still don't know all the drivers and car numbers and the poor PA didn't help. All they did at Archerfield was whinge about how small some of our (hey, listen to me...OUR....ha ha) numbers were. And they never gave out the one-two-three except as they crossed the line, and I couldn't hear it up by the hot dog stall. Overall, the two meetings, as far as the Stockrods were concerned, were a major success.

About Brisbane Stockrod Club
When Queensland Stockcar club folded, the Brisbane Formula Stockrod club invited them to race with them. F1's are V8 and F2 are 6 cylinder. They all race together and have different points scores and both F1 and F2 titles are raced for. A combined pointscore is also up for grabs at season end. Sprintcars are the big attraction however, with around 10,000 spectators at the Aussie Title. The "home" track is Archerfield and the surface is a clay mix which is designed for Sprintcars and Sedans. It is slippery when wet but tacky when it drys out a bit. The Yandina track however is a leam and granite mix which is watered then sets solid giving a totally different racing surface. Brisbane Formula Stockrods Inc. is the only club of it's type in Australia. Not only are they the only contact formula (not withstanding the ubiquitous bangers or bombers who mainly do DD's) they are the only class of speedway in Australia to have a connection with an overseas event and have the distinction of an automatic invite to the F1 stockcar World Final in the United Kingdom.
